The Saipan International School varsity team is off to a strong start as it has won three consecutive games in the NMIVA-Public School System Boys High School Volleyball League 2022-2023 played at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The Geckos grabbed their most recent win last Friday against Saipan Southern High School, with a previous win against Kagman High School last Thursday, and their first win during the season opener against Mount Carmel School last Tuesday.

The rotation of Casey Chambers, Dwight Crisostomo, Omari Joab, Dongyeon Kang, Kyle Kramer, Daniel Name, Jesus Sablan, and Will Sosa were put to the test as the Manta Rays did not go down without a fight.

In three sets, the Geckos swept the first set 21-12, with the Manta Rays turning it around in the second, 12-21. In the last set, the Geckos managed to hold onto the W, 15-8, with power plays at the net between Joab and SSHS’ hard spiker VuTheson Arachchige, but the Geckos had the upper hand in the end.

The night before, they swept KHS in two easy sets, 21-8, 21-10, as the Ayuyus were not ready for the power spikes and overhead serves of the Geckos. In the first game against the Knights, the Geckos almost fumbled their first win as the tie-breaking third set was a close score of 15-12.

In other results last Friday, all three MHS teams won their games. MHS 2 won over SIS 2, 21-15, 21-5; MHS 3 bested MCS 2, 22-20, 21-14; and their varsity team MHS 1 defeated MCS 1, 21-15, 21-11; and SSHS 2 beat Agape Christian School 2 in a close two sets, 21-15, 21-13.

The season is on a break as school is are out for Spring Break and will resume again on Tuesday, March 11, with games scheduled between ACS 2-MHS 3; MHCS 2 versus MHS 2; MCS 1 and ACS 1; KHS 1 facing MHS 1; and GCA 1 against SSHS 1.

The double-elimination tournament is scheduled from Thursday, April 27, to Saturday, April 29 and is subject to change.
