Francisco M. Sablan Middle School varsity and junior varsity teams stormed the courts and notched wins in the IT&E Interscholastic Boys Middle School Basketball League 2022-2023 on Wednesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Napu Riders JV team pummeled the Mount Carmel School Knights in a lopsided, 38-6 win, while the varsity team sailed past neighboring Hopwood Middle School, 32-20.
Keith Agulto commanded the ball from the get-go and scored the first 4 points for FMS. All the while, the Knights were still figuring out their way through the court. The first half came and went and the Knights only had one field goal made by Russel De Belen, for an 18-point deficit.
Agulto ended up with 14 markers, while teammates Jon Dane Rebuenog and Kyler Laniyo took turns at the basket for 8 points apiece.
Only Donald Tagabuel and Victor Neil Santos put up 4 more points for the Knights for a huge 6-38 loss.
The JV team has now won two of its games with their first win against DanDan Middle School on Monday.
For the varsity team, the Hilitais gave them a run for their money as the first half was a close 15-10 game in favor of the Napu Riders.
A 3-point shot resounded from FMS’ Dany Defang to start the game, with HMS’ Leon Galarse mirroring him a few shots later. The Napu Riders took turns at the net with the Hilitais in tow but gained traction right before the halftime buzzer.
Napu Riders’ Jared Manahane, Jairus Pangelinan, and Giovanni Camacho had 4 markers each, rotating the ball to each other in the second half, outpacing the tiring Hilitais.
A couple of blocking fouls called against the Napu Riders allowed Dwayne Tabhan to score, with a follow up shot from teammate Galarse.
However, FMS held onto the lead and ended the game with a 2-pointer from Leon Duenas right before a free throw by Peyton Basa.
Results of the other varsity games will be posted in the next issues of Saipan Tribune.
