The Rotary Club of Saipan will be celebrating its 44th anniversary with a softball tournament on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 11am at the American Memorial Park softball field.

About 25 Rotarians are expected to take part in the tournament, which will also serve as the club’s family social event for the year.

Rotary secretary Laila Boyer said that participating Rotarians will be divided into two groups, Rotary Lightning and Rotary Dodgers, with nine members each team to compete in a friendly softball match.

Rotarians are encouraged to bring along their family members to join in the event and for a potluck lunch after the game.

The Rotary Club of Saipan was established through the efforts of Rotary Club of Guam president Jim Alger, past president Robert J. Barry, Bill Gibson, David M. Sablan, John Trace, and Jim Hawkins.

Rotary International chartered the Rotary Club of Saipan on Feb. 16, 1968 with Sablan as the first president. Its membership consists of business, professional, and government people.

The club meets every Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Saipan Giovanni’s Restaurant. It supports its “Service Above Self” motto by holding several community projects every year, including the Parade of Books and Dictionary Project.

To support these projects, the Rotary Club of Saipan holds a number of fundraising activities, notably the Las Vegas Night.
