Marianas High School teams won two of three games in the season opener of the NMIVA-Public School System Boys High School Volleyball League 2022-2023 Tuesday night at the lively and jam-packed MHS Gymnasium.

The Dolphins’ varsity team, MHS 1, took down rival Saipan Southern High School in two sets, while MHS 2 discarded Agape Christian School also in two sets. MHS 3 fell to SSHS 2 in a three-set fight to the finish.

The Dolphins’ starting six rushed into the opening game with momentum as they won a volleyball championship just last week in a local league.

Mokyang Joseph Kim, Jerome Manzon, William Arriola, Juruel Magtalas, Dylan Mister, and John Justo brought their A game into the season opener as they swept the Manta Rays off their feet, 21-9 in the first set.

Fake plays at the net and deception by the Dolphins’ top spikers and blockers buckled the knees of the unsuspecting Manta Rays. However, the Manta Rays did not go down without a fight as they almost forced a tie-breaking third set, but fell short as the Dolphins pulled out on top, 21-18.

The junior varsity MHS 2 team, consisting of the rotation of Josh Binghit, Denn Biscocho, Alex Kim, Raja Sevugan, Noah Palacios, Joseph Ito, Jiale Dai, Anthony Deleon Guerrero, Dylan Salalila, and Rondelle Apostol, blasted past the Torchbearers, 21-4, 21-14.

Earlier in the afternoon, MHS 3 fell to SSHS 2 in a nail-biting three-set game, 21-17, 22-20, 15-12.

In other results, Grace Christian Academy defeated Kagman High School, 21-15, 21-18 and Saipan International School won against Mount Carmel School, 21-15, 21-16.
