Guam gets $1.28M for school buses, Compact impact costs
WASHINGTON D.C.-The Department of the Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs, Tony Babauta, has authorized a $1.28 million Capital Improvement Project grant for the Government of Guam’s Department of Public Works, Division of Bus Operations and $4.14 million of Compact Impact Funding to the Guam Memorial Hospital. Both CIP and CIF funding comes from the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs fiscal year 2012 allocation.
By letter, Babauta informed Gov. Eddie Calvo that $1,280,000 of fiscal year 2012 CIP funding will be made available to allow the Government of Guam to buy eight new school buses and $4,142,026 in CIF funds will be directed to GMH to help defray the costs of healthcare services provided to citizens of the Freely Associated States.
“Making the necessary investments to ensure students are afforded safe, dependable and quality transport to and from school is essential. The bus shortage on Guam has been underscored in conversations I have had with both DPW director Brown and Sen. Tom Ada. I am assured by both these leaders and will join them as they work together to find meaningful solutions to maintain the government’s fleet of buses which keep Guam’s students safe and on-time,” said Babauta.
“I [also] applaud the efforts of Governor Calvo and the Guam Memorial Hospital leadership to overcome the many challenges of providing quality healthcare to the people of Guam. Governor Calvo and I have worked closely to assist in these efforts and I am pleased we were able to direct a significant amount of compact impact funding to GMH to defray their costs of providing important and needed services for migrants from Palau, Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands,” he added.
