Bermudes is named DPS chief
Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Clement R. Bermudes has been appointed commissioner of the Department of Public Safety.
Gov. Arnold I. Palacios also designated last Feb. 28 his special assistant, Brien Sers Nicholas Jr., as the acting director for Procurement Services under the Department of Finance, until further notice.
Bermudes’ appointment requires the advice and consent of the Senate. Until the Senate takes action, he will be the acting DPS commissioner.
Bermudes was recently promoted dean of the Northern Marianas College Academic Program and Services. He used to chair NMC’s Criminal Justice Department.
Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang disclosed to Saipan Tribune last Feb. 10 that Bermudes will be appointed DPS commissioner as he is “very qualified” and has leadership qualities.
“We need some changes at DPS,” Apatang said.
Last Feb. 17, Palacios said his administration believes that Bermudes has what it takes to put DPS back together.
The previous DPS commissioner, Robert Guerrero, served for almost eight years.
As for the designation of Sers Nicholas as acting director for the Division of Procurement Services, the governor asked all department and agency heads to extend full cooperation and assistance to Sers Nicholas as he assumes this additional responsibility.
Then former acting Division of Procurement Services director was Francisco C. Aguon.
