There will be a scheduled power service Interruption today, March 3, 2023, in Garapan, from 9am to 12pm

Area affected: Garapan Fire Station Bldg., SURA Korean Restaurant, and CHUN JI Korean Restaurant Bldg.

• Momentary Outage: 9am to 9:30am

Area affected: Garapan (Sang Jee Rent a Car, High Roller Poker)

• Purpose: To relocate a primary power pole due to a realignment of a sewer main

Superior Court to draw prospective jurors today

Pursuant to 7 CMC § 3106, notice is hereby given that the Clerk of the Superior Court will be publicly drawing prospective jurors for Panels 23AS, 23BS, 23CS, 23DS, 23ES, 23FS, 23GS, 23HS, 23IS, 23JS, 23KS, 23LS, 23MS, 23NS, 23OS, 23PS, 23QS, 23RS, 23SS, 23TS, 23US, 23VS, 23WS, 23XS, 23YS, and 23ZS today, March 3, 2023, at 10am before Associate Judge Joseph N. Rip current seen through the weekend

There is a high risk of rip currents through the weekend along east-facing reefs, while the high surf advisory is cancelled for north-facing reefs.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam, dangerous rip currents are present in east-facing reefs of the Marianas. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

The large northeast swell may maintain dangerous rip currents for any reefs exposed to the large northeast swell. This includes areas like Ritidian Point and similar northeast facing reefs of the CNMI.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. The public is reminded to stay out of the water along east-facing reef lines. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. (PR)

SSHS PTSA meeting on March 9

Saipan Southern High School PTSA will have its quarterly meeting on Thursday next week, March 9, 2023 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at the SSHS cafeteria. (PR)

Water service interruption on Saturday

There will be a scheduled water service interruption on Saturday, March 4, 2023, from 8am to 5pm for Commonwealth Utilities Corp. customers in the following areas: Capital Hill, Papago, Wireless, Mt. Tapochao, and As Teo.

This will allow the CUC contractor, Hong Ye Construction, to perform electrical improvements to the Agag booster station generator building. Water services to the affected areas will resume soon after.

This project is funded by the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to provide emergency power supply to the Agag water wells.

5.6-magnitude quake southeast of Tinian

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 occurred about 111 miles southeast of Tinian at 5:28am on Thursday. March 2, 2023. Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat to Guam, Rota,Tinian, or Saipan from this earthquake. Some areas may have experienced shaking. No action is required and no tsunami impacts are expected. (PR)

CBMA to seek DOD assistance for survey assessment

The Commonwealth Bureau of Military Affairs intends to solicit assistance at no cost from the Department of Defense’s Innovative Readiness Training Program for the CNMI Civil Affairs Survey Assessment on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

This proposed assistance will involve a deliberate civil survey assessment of existing social, economic, governmental, legal, environmental, healthcare, educational, or infrastructure systems within the community for perceived vulnerabilities and identify areas for future improvements.

The proposed assistance will occur during spring/summer of fiscal year 2023.

Diamond Princess in port on March 4

The cruise ship Diamond Princess will visit the port of Saipan on March 4, 2023, arriving at approximately 8am and departing at 6pm. The ship carries 1,546 guests and 1,097 crew on board. (PR)
