The CNMI Weightlifting Federation will host its last weightlifting qualifier, the Marianas Cup 2023 on March 25 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

This year’s Marianas Cup will have four divisions in the Olympic lifts of snatch and clean & jerk.

The divisions are: Youth ages 13 to 17-years-old; Junior, ages 15 to 20; Senior, 15 years and over; and Masters, 35-years-old and over.

The $30 athlete registration fee is due no later than Friday, March 1. No late registration will be accepted.

There is also a spectator fee of $10 for adults, and $5 for children 6 to 17 years old. Admission is free for kids 5 years old and under.

Weigh-in for women competitors will be held from 7am to 8am, while the weigh-in for men competitors will be held from 9:30am to 10:30am.

To be considered for the national weightlifting team for the upcoming July 2023 10th Micronesian Games in the Marshall Islands, or the November 2023 Pacific Mini Games in the Solomon Islands, each athlete would have to compete in two qualifying events.

Last Jan. 7, 20 weightlifters took the platform and threw weights for the first CNMI Weightlifting National Team qualifier.

A total of 10 male and 10 female joined in either the youth, junior, and senior divisions of the snatch and clean and jerk lifts. It was one of several qualifying events for selection of the 2023 CNMI Weightlifting National Team.

While it was considered one qualifying event, there were no medals or awards for the top in their weight class. The other qualifying event that athletes are able to join is the Guam weightlifting competition this February 25, and/or the next weightlifting qualifier in the CNMI in March.
