3 CNMI jr. players perfect in opener
CNMI junior tennis players Robbie Schorr, Luther Lizama, and Colin Ramsey were flawless in the opening day of the 2014 North Pacific Regional Championships.

Schorr’s two other teammates are in Pool B with the second-ranked Ken Song winning his first match and the third-picked Aditya Rai splitting his first two games. Incidentally, Song’s lone win in Day 1 was against Rai, 6-3, 6-1. Rai then bounced back with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Moses Segal in the afternoon match.
In the boys U14 singles, Lizama won the battle of seeded players, as the second-ranked CNMI bet downed No. 3 Samuel Nillasca at the Hyatt Regency court, 6-2, 6-1. Lizama returned to the same venue in the afternoon and clobbered James Hourican, 6-0, 6-0, to join the unranked Kevin Zhou in the early lead in Group B.
In the boys U16 singles, Ramsey dispatched his first two opponents with each match lasting no more than one hour. He took only 50 minutes to sweep Guam’ Josh Tan, 6-0, 6-2, and then finished his second match earlier (38 minutes), dominating Dwigh Esau, 6-0, 6-0. Ramsey shared the Day 1 lead with former CNMI player Chris Cajigan.
Meanwhile, the Commonwealth’s female players also did well against Guam, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau junior netters in the opening day of the regional championships.
In the girls U12, Malika Miyawaki blanked Ridianne Wolphagen, 6-0, 6-0, in Pool A, while Jireh Warren is in the same group and pulled off an upset against the fourth-seeded Anne Skilling, 6-4, 6-1. In Pool B, Conatsu Kaga prevailed over teammate Asia Raulerson, 6-2, 6-0.
Alina Ishikawa posted the CNMI’s second shutout victory in the girls division after she whipped Anika Sachdev in the girls U14’s Pool A match. Mimi Sakano also triumphed in Pool A, stunning fourth-ranked Kanasta Abrams, 6-4, 6-4. In Pool B, Tania Tan and Ami Tsugagoshi defeated Sunshine Palik, 6-0, 6-2, and Victoria Smith, 6-1, 6-1.
