LITERARY NOOK

Cats or rats?

Share

A feline freeloader laid kittens in our porch closet.
We have three cats now, the number fluctuates.
We give them water from our outdoor faucet
And put food from our kitchen on their plates.

Living deep inside the boonies of Saipan
Means making a decision—cats or rats?
Two foes vie for the same piece of land
And refuse to be friends in these habitats.

Accept the fact the house belongs to the cats.
Feed them, shelter them, and keep them near
Or face never-ending waves of hungry rats
From the front, the sides, and worst, the rear.
