GCA student receives appointment to US Naval Academy

Grace Christian Academy congratulates Soleil Lamar, senior at GCA, for her appointment to the U.S. Navy Academy.

“This is an incredible accomplishment that few are able achieve. Soleil has remained diligent and focused over the years to attain this goal and prestigious honor,” said the school in a news release yesterday.

When asked about her appointment to the naval academy, Soleil replied: “I want to thank Congressman Kilili Sablan for giving me the nomination and the opportunity to represent the CNMI at the U.S. Naval Academy. I strongly encourage interested students to attend the Summer STEM Program and/or the Summer Seminar/Summer Leaders Experience as these opportunities will give you insight into the life of a cadet.

“My process began when I was a rising freshman. I attended the USNA Summer STEM Program and I saw the Summer Seminar students (rising seniors) exploring the campus too. I knew I wanted to attend that program next. For the next three years of high school, I worked on my leadership roles, physical activities, and academics. In my rising senior year, I attended summer programs at the three major academies: USMA, USAFA, and USNA.

When I was 5 years old, I began my taekwondo training at the Kukkiwon Blue Dragon dojo in Saipan under Grandmaster Jung Hoon Yun. I developed physical strength, discipline, leadership, and responsibility. For about 10 years I trained and obtained a second-degree black belt.

“My Grace Christian Academy family not only provided me with the academic education to succeed at the USNA, but they also encouraged and developed my well-being. I had multiple leadership roles and a supportive environment. GCA has also provided me with the opportunity to participate in multiple athletic competitions including volleyball, basketball, and track and field. Since elementary school, they have shaped me into a well-rounded individual.

“I want to thank the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Natibu Division. It is with their help and support that I am encouraged to attend the USNA. I appreciate the adult volunteers’ leadership and their support and guidance on this journey.

“And finally, I want to thank my parents for their support and encouragement. Without their help to keep me on track and push me to succeed, it would have been more challenging to accomplish this goal.

“And lastly, words of encouragement for those considering attending an academy. Focus on your SAL: Scholar, Athlete, and Leader. These are important components for all the academies.

“Once again, I want to express my gratitude to everyone that helped me accomplish this goal. I am excited to begin my life as a midshipman at the USNA.” (PR)
