The American Red Cross’ mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The Marianas High School Red Cross Club fulfills this mission by providing opportunities for students to give back to their community.
Working with the NMI local chapter and High School Red Cross Club coordinator Richard Defan, the club provides its members with the opportunity to help the community by doing outreach to teach others about disaster preparedness and what you can do to become a volunteer to assist with the Red Cross humanitarian work.
“Joining the Red Cross club allows me to do service activities to help the community and myself. I want to positively impact my community with the extra time that I have,” said club member Amena Mahmud.
Amira Shairee De Guzman says joining the club has enabled her to grow. “Red Cross allows me to develop and grow as a person by doing volunteer work,” she said.
Sunny Ma said the Red Cross club allows her to develop and enhance her social skills.
“Red Cross is a benevolent organization and allows me to connect with others and become involved in my community!” said another club member, Eunice Molina.

According to Defan, the clubs were created “to engage our local high school students with a goal to provide community service and volunteering opportunities and to give the students at the high schools the chance to help our NMI families.”
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to victims of disasters; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. The Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to deliver its mission. For more information, visit redcross.org/NMI or call 234-3459.
