Basa, Igitol excel in javelin throw of NMA challenge

Tyrik Basa and Maria Igitol excelled in their respective divisions of the javelin throw in the two-day Northern Marianas Athletics Track and Field Challenge last Friday and Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex.
In Saturday’s javelin throw event, Basa threw the javelin the farthest in the men’s open division with an impressive distance of 36.09m. Second place Kaipo Dikito was almost 10m behind with a 27.53m distance. Third place went to Lyle Andrew with a distance of 24.32m.
In the women’s open division, Igitol’s javelin traveled a distance of 20.34m, followed by Zarinae Sapong’s 16.73m throw.
Leo Wania was the lone entry in the javelin throw’s master’s division and threw a distance of 21.80m.

Discus throw
The other field event on Saturday was the discus throw, where Lyle Andrew easily threw the discus to a first-place distance of 30.12m in the men’s open division. Sliding into second was Kaipo Dikito’s discus at 26.21m and third went to Basa’s 26.09m throw.
In the women’s open division, Cassandra Camacho threw the discus at an even 21.21m, while Katie Camacho threw at a distance of 19.38m for second place, and Sapong threw the discus at 17.61m for third place.
In the master’s division, Derek Chambers threw a distance of 23.86m; Maria Ornes threw the disc at 20.89m; Wania threw the discus at a distance of 20.28m; and Elias Rangamar threw it at 17.66m.
Long jump
In the long jump event on Friday, Alexander Camacho leaped the farthest distance of 5.02m, followed by Michael Rodgers’ distance of 4.72m, and Orrin Pharmin’s 4.21m.
In the master’s division, Wania bagged first with a leap of 3.95m with Greg Borja not too far behind at 3.61m.
Shot put
Joey Colisao’s 9.61m heave of the shot put landed him in first place in the men’s open division. Lyle Andrew threw a close second with a 9.55m distance; third place went to Omari Joab with a distance of 9.15m.
In the master’s division, Greg Borja threw the heavy ball into a distance of 7.6m, followed by Rangamar’s 6.8m, then Wania’s 6.5m throw.
Close to 66 participants joined the last Northern Marianas Athletics Track and Field Challenge of the year, with the next meets to happen next year again.
