So far so good for Team NMI in the 2022 FINA World Championships in Melbourne.

Team NMI coach Hiroyuki Kimura said Mario Batallones unofficially shattered the national 100m breaststroke record and the mixed medley relay team of Batallones, Isaiah Aleksenko, Jinnosuke Suzuki, and Shoko Litulumar unofficially updated the CNMI record in the short course mixed relay.

Seeing action in Day 3 of the competition Wednesday, Batallones swam the women’s 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:18.08, unofficially shattering the 1:20.03 standard former CNMI national swimmer Minerva Cabrera set in July 27, 2005 during the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Meanwhile, in Day 2 last Tuesday Batallones, Aleksenko, Suzuki, and Litulumar unofficially reset the CNMI record in the mixed medley relay with a swim of 1:58.93 that beat the 2:09.28 set by Lennosuke Suzuki, Juhn Tenorio, Jinju Thompson, and Aika Watanabe in April 19, 2019 during that year’s Micronesian Swimming Championships in Palau.

It’s also worthy to note that Team NMI beat Micronesian rivals the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, and Papua New Guinea in the mixed medley relay.

In Day 1 last Monday, Litulumar swam her 100m backstroke to kickstart the CNMI participation in the 2022 FINA World Championships.

Kimura said Litulumar didn’t reach her target, but she got a lot of experience with a swim of 1:14.72, good for 46th place in the event.

Before arriving in Australia, Kimura and the CNMI national swimmers had a stopover in Japan where they reunited with former national swimmer Juhn Tenorio in a mini swim camp.

Batallones, Aleksenko, Suzuki, and Litulumar trained at the Sports Academy Tomisato with Tenorio, who is in Japan to advance his prospects in enrolling at Hosei University.
