A total of 19 childcare providers on Saipan attended the “Active Supervision and Maintaining Ratios” training facilitated by Evergreen Learning coach Erlaine Evangelista at the Evergreen Learning Training Center in Chalan Kanoa last Dec. 3, 2022.

It was learned at the training that “active supervision” goes beyond basic supervision.  The technique includes six different strategies:  1. Set up the environment, 2. Position of staff, 3. Scan and count, 4. Listen, 5. Anticipate children’s behavior, and 6. Engage and redirect.  In addition, the training emphasized ratios—the number of adults who are present to teach and care for children in a childcare center. Child to adult ratios for the CNMI varies, depending on the age of the youngest child in the group.

During this two-hour-long training, participants engaged in a variety of activities to better understand quality practices related to active supervision and maintaining ratios.  Attendees engaged in group discussions related to their experiences, viewed short video clips, and identified possible strategies for active supervision along with lapses within the shared video clips. Participants also reviewed a scenario and identified which strategies were used to help implement active supervision.

This training was made possible through funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Care, CNMI CCDF Program, under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. (PR)
