Over 300 joined Marianas Health’s HAFA Miles 5K Run/Walk in celebration of National Homecare and Hospice Month, National Diabetes Prevention and Awareness Month, and National Caregivers Month last Nov. 26 and Nov. 29.
Marianas Health and its subsidiary agencies held its 2022 HAFA Miles 5K Run/Walk on Saturday morning, Nov. 26 on Saipan and Nov. 29 on Rota as an opportunity to bring awareness to those campaigns, and for schools to show their school spirit, as well as an opportunity to raise funds for each school.
Marianas Health will be giving a cash incentive of $350 to the school with the most participants present and completing the run/walk.
On Saipan, the elementary school with the most participants was Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School with five; the middle school winner was Dandan Middle School with seven; and the high school with the most participants was Saipan Southern High School with 39.
An additional 142 parents, teachers, and interested runners also enjoyed the early morning walk with a collection of Marianas Health giveaways and light refreshments after the race.
The first runner who came in for Saipan’s event was Marianas High School student and president of MHS Run Club, Pony Tang. He said he joined the event to represent MHS and encourage other students to run.
The run/walk on Saipan started at the Garapan Basketball Court with the turnaround point at the Japanese World War II Tank Memorial along Beach Road.
The Rota HAFA Miles 5K Run/Walk had 130 participants starting at the San Isidro Church in Sinapalo and looped into a complete circle at the Tun Joaquin Baseball Field.
Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Jr./ Sr. High School had the most participants with 43 total students. Rota parents, teachers, and other participants came out to join the run/walk as well.
“By participating in the 2022 Marianas Health HAFA Miles 5K Run/Walk we honor the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists, and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. With the community’s participation together we all raise awareness on the diabetes epidemic, especially here in the CNMI, and continue to fight to find the resources to prevent and manage diabetes. We also honor those who serve as family caregivers, those who educate communities on caregiving issues, and to increase support for caregivers,” said Marianas Health.
