Saipan-born Roman Reyes Jr. is making tidal waves in the sport of powerlifting after shattering the Idaho State Squat record on his first attempt in the Corrupted Strength Classic 2022 held in Houston, Texas last Nov. 5.
Weighing in at 98.3 kgs, the 22-year-old Reyes competed in the 100-kg juniors division and finished fourth overall in a competitive class.
The state record was 250 kgs/551 lbs, which Reyes broke with an opening attempt of 252.5 kgs/556 lbs. Reyes now holds the state record with his successful third attempt of 267.5 kgs/589.7 Ibs. His second attempt was 262.5 kgs/578.7 Ibs.
Along with completing all squat attempts successfully, Reyes also successfully completed all three bench press attempts, while completing two out of three deadlifts for an overall lift of 672.6 kgs/1,483.083 lbs, and securing the fourth place spot overall out of 10 competitors.
Reyes’ bench press attempts are 140 kgs/308.6 lbs, 145 kgs/319.6 lbs and 150 kgs/330.6 lbs. His deadlifts are 242.5 kgs/534.6 lbs, 255 kgs/562.1 lbs, and his failed attempt of 267.5 kgs/589.7 lbs.
Reyes, via email, said on his last deadlift attempt that “if they gave me my last deadlift I would have walked away with a bronze medal. I got two red lights for downward motion of the bar but after reviewing numerous videos, there was actually no downward motion.”
The co-owner of Pacific Mist LLC said, “my goal two years ago was to be a state record-holder. Now that I have it, the next goal will be to compete at a regional meet and qualify for nationals.”
Throughout 14 weeks, the National Academy of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer and powerlifting coach said that he was self-coached throughout the meet preparation.
“I would like to thank Marianas Native for the continued support and for the gear they have given me throughout the year; my significant other, Mercedes Deleon Guerrero, for encouraging me every day to be the best that I can be; my parents Roman Reyes Sr. and Francisca M. Reyes for the unconditional love and support since I have started this journey,” said Reyes.
On Dec. 5, 2020, Reyes placed third in the 2020 USA Powerlifting Mecca’s Holiday Hoist event in Meridian, Idaho.
