Oil companies in the CNMI dropped their prices yesterday by 10 cents in the first oil price adjustment this month
Mobil Oil Marianas surprised the Saipan community with an unexpected drop in fuel prices earlier yesterday afternoon.
As of press time yesterday, Shell Marianas had yet to also lower its prices but the two oil companies typically mirror each other’s price movements and Shell is expected to follow suit today.
With the rollback, Mobil now charges $5.06 per gallon of its Extra fuel from $5.16. Mobil’s’ Supreme fuel also went down from $5.61 per gallon to $5.51 while diesel dropped by 25 cents from $6.53 per gallon to $6.28.
An 18-year-old high school student who came to gas up, said he was surprised to see that gas had dropped. “I really wasn’t expecting to pull up right in time for a gas rollback. I was pleasantly surprised,” he said.
Another motorist, a 38-year-old woman, said that price rollbacks are always a welcome surprise.
“I guess with the community in election season, a rollback is at the back of everyone’s mind. But it’s always a good surprise. Who wouldn’t welcome a decrease in fuel prices, no matter how small or big it is?” she said.
A gas attendant said he is always happy when he finds out that gas prices are being rolled back.
“We don’t know when the main office will roll back or increase our gas prices here on Saipan. But, whenever I come into work and I find out prices have gone down, it’s always a better feeling than when gas [prices] go up,” he said.
For months, the CNMI saw a string of rollbacks but that streak was broken last Oct. 11 with a 10-cent increase when oil companies raised prices from $5.16 to $5.26 per gallon of regular fuel.
