Managaha pier rehab expected by May 2023

The Department of Public Lands said yesterday that it now expects to finish the Managaha Pier Rehabilitation Project by May 2023.
DPL recently acquired a one-year extension for this environmentally and historically sensitive project by Costal Resource Management for period of Sept. 30, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2023, according to a DPL news release yesterday.
“We anticipate, after approval of change work order that is being routed and with complete and qualified documentations, the Department of Public Works’ Technical Service Division will issue notice to proceed to the contractor to proceed with [the project], within the nearest future,” the DPL news release states.
The design of this long-awaited project started since 1991, when DPL contracted Henry K. Pangelinan and Associates to design the pier for expansion. The construction was halted back then when it was discovered that the Managaha Pier had been listed in 1984 in the National Register of Historic Places. It’s been 31 years since the last known improvements of the Managaha Island pier.
More than two years ago, on Aug. 20, 2020, DPL successfully applied and received a federal grant award of $220,652 for the Managaha Pier Rehabilitation Project. Although Pacific Corp., Ltd. was the winning bidder, via a Request for Proposal, the project never really kicked off, due to the onset of the global pandemic (COVID-19). Since the easing of social restrictions caused by COVID-19, DPL has picked up on the project, with the help of IRP (Infrastructure Recovery Program) and HPO (Historical Preservation Office).
“DPL extends a sincere appreciation for our community’s patience and understanding as we work toward improving the safety of our Managaha Island pier,” the release further states.
