Film studio seen as move to diversify economy further

In a move that he describes as another way to diversify the CNMI economy while also boosting the CNMI’s image abroad, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres is touting this week’s visit by movie producer Brad Krevoy, who is reportedly planning to set up shop in the Commonwealth.
An Office of the Governor news release confirmed that Krevoy will be coming to Saipan this week, stating that “Krevoy is set to create a film industry in the CNMI by developing a movie studio, creating new jobs for local residents, and producing a minimum of 20 motion pictures during the next five years.”
Northern Marianas College will be hosting a meet and greet with Krevoy at the Hafa Adai Roasting Company Cafe in T-Galleria today, Nov. 21, from 6pm to 8pm.
“I want to thank Mr. Krevoy for accepting my invitation and taking the time to visit the CNMI. I also want to express my gratitude for his interest in wanting to help diversify the CNMI’s industries, as he would be bringing his experience and expertise to the Marianas to develop a film industry based here,” said Torres in the Office of the Governor news release.
Torres said he has always advocated for the diversification “of our industries here in the CNMI for our economy and for our people. Not only will Mr. Krevoy’s investment in a film industry in the CNMI benefit our local existing and aspiring filmmakers, as well as generate revenue for our government and expand job opportunities for our entire community, but it will also positively impact and boost our tourism industry because of the exposure the CNMI will receive from films made here in our beautiful islands,” stated Torres.
Bridge Capital, LLC vice president Bartley Jackson spoke about Krevoy’s visit and plans during the Rotary Club of Saipan’s meeting last Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
Jackson said that part of Krevoy’s plans is to train a resident film crew in the art of picture making, editing, just the nuts and bolts of how to make a movie.”
“He’s in discussions currently with NMC president [Dr.] Galvin [Deleon Guerrero], regarding the creation of a film study curriculum at NMC for those in the Commonwealth interested in the production side and performance side of filmmaking,” Jackson added.
