Zhi matches lowest score in Marianas Classic Golf

CNMI national golf team member Zhi Yun Li equalled his lowest gross score in winning the category of the 2022 Visa Marianas Classic Golf Tournament last Nov. 5 at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.
The 14-year-old Marianas High School student fired a 4-under 68 to beat Michael Gatewood (72) and Marco Peter (73) in the fundraising tournament organized by Bank of Guam, IT&E, and IP&E.
Zhi had identical 34s in the front and back nines that included an impressive seven birdies in holes No. 2, 5, 8, 12, 14, 17, and 18. He also managed to par holes No. 1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 15, and 16 and had only four bogeys—holes No. 4, 11, and 13.
He said his putting was really working for him during the tournament despite course conditions being not really ideal due to the strong winds.
“For me I think it was the 17th hole, which was my second hole because it gave me a boost of confidence because I made a birdie,” Zhi replied when asked about his best hole.
The win was worth $300 for Zhi, while Gatewood and Peter went home with $200 and $200, respectively.
Flor Jones topped the women’s low gross with her 86 with Tina Goodwin taking second with her 88.
In the men’s double peoria, Joseph Muña won the category with a net score of 69.4, followed by IT&E president Ricky Delgado Jr.’s 69.6, while Dean Pangelinan completed the Top 3 with his 69.8.
Shirley Sablan took the top prize in the women’s double peoria with her net score of 80, while Michelle Sablan took second with her 82.
The Top 3 in the other categories pocketed the same cash prizes as the winners of the men’s low gross.
Charles Peters, meanwhile, nosed out Delgado for the low gross among employees of Bank of Guam, IT&E, and IP&E. Both of them carded gross scores of 78, but Peters won the corporate challenge on the third playoff hole.
