An after-school program of Marianas High School called the “Heart 2 Heart for Life” health awareness initiative was able to serve 70 people during an outreach at the Garapan Fishing Base last Saturday, which coincided with the Sabalu Market.
The free outreach, which had students participating in after-school programs, as well as teacher aides and volunteers, performed free blood pressure checks for interested members of the public.
The outreach was part of their activities for Project STEM, with this outreach in the health science category.
“Part of our activity is…learning how we can really live a sustainable future. …This is one of our activities to do a community outreach, to serve the community because not everybody can have access,” said Cynthia Ferrari, who is a special education teacher at MHS.
After the event, organizers described the “Heart to Heart for Life” outreach as a success, prompting them to consider of expanding it to about three times a month.
The outreach will happen again tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Garapan Fishing Base during the Sabalu Market, from 8am to 11am, and on Nov. 12, from 8am to 11am, at the Minachom Atdao Pavilion across the Ada Gym in Susupe.
The last time this outreach was done was at the Marianas Business Plaza parking lot in early 2020, where they served 90 people. They stopped when the pandemic hit.
MHS is one of the beneficiaries of Project TEAMS or Twice Exceptional Students Achieving and Matriculating in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. MHS ran it as Project STEM in 2015 and ended in 2019, and was a five-year development program for students with special needs who have potential in science and math and are interested in STEM.
