- DONATION Sen. Edith E. DeLeon Guerrero (D-Saipan), and Reps. Denita K. Yangetmai (D- Saipan) and Corina L. - LOCAL AUTHOR Northern Marianas College students and employees had a chance to speak with Julian Aguon, a Guam-based lawyer, activist, and author. His book, The Properties of Perpetual Light, is currently being used as a textbook in the college’s Current Issues capstone course (SO297). Aguon and members of the University of Guam Press also facilitated a training session for NMC instructors who teach the SO297 class. For more information on Aguon’s book, visit www.uogpress.com. - MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDERS-Twenty-two Northern Marianas College students recently took part in a youth mental health first aid training sponsored by the Area Health Education Center, or AHEC. The Youth Mental Health First Aid training course is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. The course, which was taught by Associate Director of Hawaii-Pacific Basin AHEC Erica Davis, introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. - LEGACY FLAME TREES-Gov. Ralph DLG Torres is assisted while planting a pair of flame trees at the CNMI Veteran’s Cemetery entrance in Marpi last Thursday, as a prelude to Friday’s celebration of Veterans Day. - The American Red Cross and its partners are preparing families to act quickly through the Home Fire Campaign. “Through targeted outreach and strategic partnerships, we are connecting with families across the islands and educating kids about the importance of home fire safety and general disaster preparedness” said JD Tenorio, disaster program manager of the American Red Cross.

- “In our line of work, every second counts…installing smoke alarms in homes gives families a greater chance of surviving home fires” said Robert Mojica, public information officer with the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services. “We encourage families to create home fire escape maps and have a designated meeting place outside away from the home where they can wait for firefighters to arrive.”

- Since 2017, the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter and its partners have installed over 1,000 smoke alarms across Saipan, Tinian, and Rota effectively making over 450 homes safer.
