The Department of Public Safety has affirmed that the recent San Roque auto-pedestrian collision that killed a man was not a hit-and-run and the driver of the car involved is currently under investigation. Besides that, DPS continues to issue minimal details about the incident.

According to an official update from DPS, the driver involved in the auto pedestrian accident last Oct. 18, a 32-year-old local male, is currently under investigation by police. The accident claimed the life of Melvin Sakisat.

More details about the fatal accident are forthcoming as it is still a developing investigation.

The department did note that initial investigation ruled that there was no alcohol involved in the accident.

According to a previous article on the Saipan Tribune, police responded to a call regarding an auto pedestrian crash in San Roque across Kensington Hotel Saipan at around 9:40pm last Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The victim, Sakisat, was reportedly hit by what is believed to be a pickup truck on his way to work on the evening of Oct. 18.

It was learned that the victim was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center at around 10pm, but succumbed to his injuries at around 12am. Sakisat was officially pronounced dead by Dr. Elizabeth Culp at around 12:53am on Oct. 19.

Since the accident, family members of Sakisat started a GoFundMe account to help raise funds for the victim’s funeral. For those interested in donating, you may visit the GoFundMe account at https://www.gofundme.com/yedaa-funeral-expenses.

According to family members of the deceased, Sakisat is survived by his daughter, Lina, and siblings: Molly, Eda, Jerome, Julian, and Peter.
