Kataki (The Enemy) to be staged at Sugar King Park
The Friends of the Arts will be staging Shimon Wincelberg’s Kataki (The Enemy), at Sugar King Park on June 7 and 8, from 5pm to 7pm, beginning with an optional tour of the Park, conducted by members of the Marianas High School Japanese Language Club.
Directed by Harold Easton and produced by Leo Goode, this one-act play with a cast of two will be giving the audience a taste of the Pacific war front, following the fall of Saipan. The story tells of a young American airman (played by Francis Fidelino) and an older Japanese sailor (played by Yoshi Matsuda) stranded on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean on the B29 Route to Tokyo during World War II. With neither knowing the other’s language, and a single bayonet shared between them, the two men attempt to communicate and coexist on the island.
The community and members of the Friends of the Arts are invited to come to the play and get in on the action with tickets at $15 for the general public, $12 for members of the Friends of the Arts, $8 for students, and $5 for Thespians. The play will be enacted on the grass in the center of the Park under the large fallen tree.
