Tritons goes 5-1 in Clutch Guam Tournament

The last time the Triton Men’s Basketball Team played in a Clutch Guam 3X3 Basketball Tournament, they went 0-4 and did not qualify for bracket play, but this weekend in the “Battle For The Rock” Clutch Guam 3X3 Basketball tournament, held in the UOG Calvo Field House, the Tritons went 5-1 and finished tied for third in the 16-team tournament.
The team of Logan Hopkins, Matt Santos, Daryll Robles and Kirston-Lee Guzman went 3-0 on Saturday in pool play to claim the No. 1 seed for Pool D. On Sunday, they opened bracket play against Team Gilas and won 18-9. UOG advanced to the quarterfinal round against the Affiliates and defeated them 15-10 to move to the tournament semi-finals.
In the semifinals, the Tritons faced one of their nemesis from the Triton Leagues in the MVPs and lost 22-11 to a team made up of current and former Guam National Team members. The MVPs would go on to win the tournament.
On the women’s side of the tournament, the UOG Lady Trident team finished tied for third in the women’s division. The Lady Tridents made up of Lovely Niloobau, Amanda Uncangco, Nicole Pineda and Alaunah Merto finished the round-robin part of play in a three-way tie for fifth place but was declared the fifth place team by the tournament tiebreakers and went to bracket play. The Lady Tridents were 2-6 for the tournament.
The Lady Tridents opened bracket play against No. 4 seed Elements and pulled an upset by beating the Elements 6-5. UOG then moved to the semifinals and played Team Hoops and lost 4-18. The Hoops were the eventual champions of the women’s division.
The Trident men’s team went 1-2 on Saturday and played the Crossover team in the first round of bracket play and dropped a 7-13 game. The Tridents were made up of Brandan Duenas, Issac Snively, Christian Tapay and Cisco Uncangco.
The Lady Triton team finished the tournament 1-5 and was in the fifth-place tie for the final bracket play spot, but due to the tiebreaker procedures, were left out of bracket play. The Lady Tritons were made up of Kat Santos, Myranda Brogger, Rozanna Claros, and Maria Pagdilao. (PR)
