The Lady Tritons of the University of Guam return to the Lady Triton-Global Learning Super League on Wednesday night at the UOG Calvo Field House with high hopes of a good fall season after coming off a winless campaign in the spring of 2022. The Super League is full this fall with six teams in the league and the return of the spring champions, the Lady Bombers of Andersen Air Force Base, who completed their dominance in the league with a 10-0 record in the spring of 2022.

The Tritons have a full roster of 13 players from the outset this season, a much different scenario from last spring, when they had only three players after tryouts and had to beg for players to join the team. But the UOG dorm students did save the Lady Tritons, with several ladies joining the team from other islands around Micronesia and the Tritons were able to play a full season in the Super League, and while success was measured in team improvement over the season, there were no wins for UOG, but the fall season is hopefully a different story for the Lady Tritons.

The team is a mixture of returnees and newcomers, as most of the UOG dorm students are now playing with Team MIBBC (formerly the Federated States of Micronesia National Team), the new team in the Super League. UOG returns Team MVP, Kat Santos, to the fall version of the team as well as Jasmin Samonte, Rozanna Claros, Lovely Niloobau and Maria Pagdilao who finished the spring season with the Tritons.

“The team plays unselfishly, they play together, and they play hard,” said UOG women’s basketball assistant coach Jill Acda.

The starting five for the Tritons consist of Myranda Brogger, an exchange student from University of Minnesota at Morris; Rozanna Claros; Nicole Pineda; Jazmin Samonte; and Amanda Uncangco.

The Lady Tritons play the BallHers club team in the opening game on Wednesday night at 6:30pm in the UOG Calvo Field House, in the nightcap, the Lady Bombers take-on the Acadavate team, the two teams who met in the Super League finals last spring. On Friday night, Team MIBBC takes on Fuetsa in the opening game while the Bombers play the BallHers in Friday’s nightcap.

The six-team league will mostly play on Monday and Wednesday nights through late October with the championship game scheduled for Monday, Oct. 24. The Super League will feature a first time All-Star game on Wednesday, Oct. 26 to close out the season. The league will have a 16-member All-League team named as well.

All games will be “Live” streamed through the UOG Athletic Facebook page. Five games will be presented on ‘Live” TV through PBS Guam KGTF TV12 with three regular season games featuring UOG Lady Triton matchups and then one semi-final game as well as the Super League Championship game. The PBS match-ups will feature game commentary by Fred Peters.

The first PBS Guam broadcast will be Monday, Sept. 12 with the Lady Tritons playing Team MIBBC at 8:15pm.

UOG’s Global Learning and Engagement Department is the title sponsor for the Lady Triton Super League and their donation allows the league to have 5 “Live” TV games with PBS Guam. (PR)
