Logan Hopkins returns To UOG Men’s Basketball

On Sunday morning at 8am, a familiar face returned to the main court at the University of Guam Calvo Field House, as Logan Hopkins started shooting 3-pointers in the UOG basketball arena for the first time in two years.

Logan Hopkins has returned to UOG to finish his Marine Biology degree as well as play basketball again for the Tritons. Hopkins is a former Triton Athletics Student-Athlete of the Year as well as the most valuable player for the men’s basketball team. But he was forced to leave UOG due to medical issues in his family back in Texas during early 2020 and most had thought his career at the University of Guam was over.

“We have stayed in contact over the past two years, and we knew he wanted to return to UOG to finish his degree as well as play again for the Tritons, so once his family issues were resolved, he let us know he was coming back and would arrive on August 13. I got a WhatsApp notice from him on Sunday morning at 7am asking if the gym was going to be open today and I told him I would be there at 8am and come over from the dorm to shoot and he was there,” said UOG Athletics director Doug Palmer.

The 5’10” Hopkins has been the leading scorer for the Tritons in the past, serving as a guard and 3-point marksmen for UOG but he has also been known to weave through KFC Bombers defense to score a layup on occasion as well. 

The Tritons were able to restart basketball in the spring from the pandemic and had a 10-20 record over the spring semester. The young Tritons were expected to make a jump in their record with most of the heart of the team coming back and with the addition Logan, that may still come true but the spring of 2022 most valuable player Diane’ “D” Blackmon has not returned from the mainland so the Tritons will not be as talented as hoped but Hopkins should help with that pain.

The Tritons had 19 players at the first night of tryouts and they return both Matt Santos and Darryll Robles as two of the big three from the spring, as well as Tristan Valdes who was an occasional starter or the first player off the bench in the spring to bring some depth to the line-up.

Hopkins will also become a multi-team player for the Tritons, as he plans on playing baseball for UOG as well. 

“Logan was a three-sport player in high school, playing football, baseball and basketball,” said Palmer.
Hopkins has two semesters to finish his undergraduate degree at UOG but he may return as a graduate student to pursue his academic dream of studying sharks and other marine life with a masters degree. (PR)
