Rep. Joseph A. Flores (Ind-Saipan) is seeking his third term as a member of the House of Representatives representing Precinct 1, while Valentino N. Taisacan Jr. is running for Northern Islands mayor under the NMI Republican Party.
Flores and Taisacan, accompanied by their family members, supporters, and committees to elect them, submitted their petitions for nomination and candidacy documents to the Commonwealth Election Commission office in Susupe Friday and Thursday, respectively.
Flores, who is running as an independent candidate, said he still wants to continue helping the people of the CNMI.
“I still have the drive to help them,” said Flores who is a retired police officer.
He said there’s still a lot of work to be done in the community so everybody will have a better life.
For the Northern Islands’ mayoral race, Taisacan, a member of the CNMI Cannabis Commission’s board of directors, filed his candidacy Thursday, ahead of the rest of Republican Party candidates, who are going to file together on Aug. 9.
Jocelyn Kaipat Aldan Kapileo, a sister of the late Northern Islands Mayor Francisco Jerome Aldan, was the first to file her candidacy for NI mayor as an independent.
Current NI Mayor Vicente Santos is not seeking re-election.
As of last week, there were 168 registered voters for the Northern Islands.
The general election will be held on Nov. 8, 2022.
