On Thursday, July 14, 2022, at around 2:50 pm, Boating Safety Section of the Department of Public Safety received a call reporting a distressed vessel near Dump Cove, just west of Tinian.

At around 3:03pm, Zodiac 3 departed from the Smiling Cove Marina and headed toward the distressed vessel. At 3:37pm, Zodiac 3 arrived at the vessel, established a tow, and headed back toward the marina. All occupants of the vessel stated they were okay and did not need medical attention. At around 3:42pm, Zodiac 3 arrived at the marina with the distressed vessel. The vessel was boarded upon rescue and received a no violation citation.

According to the crew of the vessel, they departed Guam around 4:30am and made their way toward Saipan. As they made their way to the west of Tinian they heard one of the engines make a sputtering sound before it died out. They started up their vessel but it would not reach 2,000 RPM. They notified their contact on Saipan, who called the DPS Boating Safety for assistance.

“We encourage boaters to notify friends and/or family members about your fishing route or what area you plan to be fishing and what time you expect to return. If you are having troubles out in the water call in to Channel 16 on your VHF radio when you need help, or if you would like to report a distressed vessel,” said a DPS news release of the incident.
