Deleon Guerrero earns master’s degree from NYU

Matthew O. Deleon Guerrero, a Mount Carmel School AlumKnight and recently confirmed board member of the Commonwealth Development Authority, graduated with honors from New York University during its 182nd Commencement Exercise on May 21, 2014, at the New York Yankee Stadium.

Deleon Guerrero received his master’s degree in International Development.

The keynote speaker during the commencement ceremony was Janet Yellen, chairperson of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Deleon Guerrero obtained his bachelor’s of science degree in Political Science from Boise State University. During his time in Boise, he worked for U.S. Rep. Walt Minnick, the political relations firm Strategies360, and several Idaho political campaigns.

Following his undergraduate education, Deleon Guerrero worked as a staff assistant for CNMI Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan in Washington, D.C., before departing in 2012 to attend NYU.

While a student at NYU, Deleon Guerrero’s research focused on development of island economies. Deleon Guerrero served as associate editor for the NYU student academic journal Perspectives on Global Issues, spent the summer session with the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies, and was the recipient of the Mitsui-USA Foundation Scholarship.

In his final semester, Deleon Guerrero conducted research on Saipan on the role of development in the CNMI. He is chairman of the CNMI Republican Party Committee on Youth and Manhoben Affairs and is a member of the inaugural class of the Marianas Chapter of the Pacific Centuries Fellowship.  Currently, Deleon Guerrero is an economic development consultant for Cornerstone Consulting Services on Saipan.

Deleon Guerrero was speaker of the 9th CNMI Youth Congress and is the son of Edward C. and Eve Deleon Guerrero of Koblerville. (PR)
