Camacho and Bogdan seek retention on the bench
Superior Court associate judges Joseph N. Camacho and Wesley M. Bogdan are seeking retention on the bench this Nov. 8 general election.
Commonwealth Election Commission executive director Kayla Igitol said Wednesday afternoon that the Judiciary called to inform that Camacho and Bogdan will go to CEC today, Friday, to submit their letters of intent to seek retention.
Igitol also told Saipan Tribune that, as of yesterday, CNMI Supreme Court Associate Justice John A. Manglona has yet to notify their office whether he is going to run for retention.
It is the second time that Camacho will be going for retention election, while this will be Bogdan’s first.
At the November 2016 election, Camacho received an overwhelming number of votes for his retention on the bench. He first ascended to the Superior Court in November 2011.
Bogdan officially assumed the post of associate judge in November 2017 after Gov. Ralph DLG Torres appointed him to the bench.
A judge’s term is six years, while it’s an eight-year term for a justice.
If Manglona decides to seek retention, it will be his third time.
At the November 2007 election, voters overwhelmingly voted for Manglona’s retention as associate justice. At the November 2014 election, voters again overwhelmingly retained Manglona as associate justice. His term expires in 2024.
Manglona ascended to the Superior Court as associate judge in 1998. In 2000, then-governor Pedro P. Tenorio appointed him to become an associate justice for the Supreme Court.
Under a constitutional amendment, the question of whether justices or judges will be retained shall be put to a vote at a general election immediately before the end of that justice’s or judge’s initial term of office.
