Sen. Teresita A. Santos (Ind-Rota) and three others were the first to file their candidacies before the Commonwealth Election Commission in Susupe yesterday for the Nov. 8 general election.

CEC executive director Kayla Igitol said the CEC started accepting submission of nominating petitions and candidacy documents yesterday and that Santos was the earliest to file at 7:49am, followed by Magdalena San Nicolas Mesngon, Ignacio Villagomez Cabrera, and Joseph Muña Mendiola.

Igitol said that Santos is running for mayor of Rota as an independent candidate.

The senator said yesterday that she still has a lot of work ahead of her as she will continue to meet with her people and engage in “meaningful conversations and attentively listen and hear first-hand their issues, concerns, ideas, recommendations and actively integrate it” into her platform.

“My platform is forthcoming and will be released in the very near future,” Santos said.

Santos’ second term as senator will end in January 2023. She also served two terms as a member of the House of Representatives.

Igitol said Mesngon is seeking election for mayor of Rota as an independent as well.

Mesngon is currently a Head Start teacher. She previously served as director of Rota’s Community and Cultural Affairs.

Igitol said Cabrera filed his candidacy for a Precinct 5 seat in the House of Representatives as an independent. Cabrera is chairman of the Friends of the Monument.

Igitol said Mendiola filed his candidacy for Saipan Municipal Council.
Back in 2018, Mendiola filed his candidacy as an independent candidate for Precinct 5 of the House. The CEC, however, informed him that he did not meet the residency requirements at that time. Mendiola then submitted a letter to CEC, informing them about his withdrawal as a candidate. He said he respects the requirements of election laws.

Aug. 10, 2022 is the last day to file candidacies and submit nominating petitions. Yesterday was also the last day to establish residency requirements.
