Coby Santos and sisters E’Anna and Ky’Sonna Kwon were named to the All-Tournament Select team of 2022 FIBA Micronesian Cup held last week at the UOG Calvo Fieldhouse.

Santos was joined in the men’s all-tourney team by Palau’s  Jerry Ngiraremiang, Federated States of Micronesia’s A.J. Bisalen, and Guam’s Joe Blas and Ben Borja.

The Won sisters, meanwhile, made the women’s all-tourney team along with Palau’s Kristen Sugiyama and Guam’s Mia San Nicolas and Derin Stinnett.

Santos led all scorers in the four-day tournament with an average of 22.8 points per game on 45.8% field goal percentage on 2-pointers, 71.4% from the three throw line, and 38.5% on 3-point shots.

E’Anna, meanwhile, led all cage belles in scoring with an 18.5  points per game clip in four games. Ky’Sonna was third overall with an average of 13 points per game.

E’Anna shot 44.1% on 2-pointers, 71.5% from the free throw line, and 30% from the land of plenty, while Ky’Sonna submitted percentages of 29.4%, 72.2%, and 21.1% from those areas of the court, respectively.

Santos’ CNMI National Men’s Basketball Team finished with a bronze medal, while the Wons’ CNMI National Women’s Basketball Team bagged the silver medal in the tourney.

Santos was glad to have been included in the All-Tournament Select team of the Micro Cup.

“Happy with what me and the team got. We gave it all we had despite our differences with the other teams. We know that we had a shot at that silver medal, but it just didn’t come our way.”

He added that more than the hardware, he’s just happy that the men’s team was able to experience this type of high-level basketball.

“At the end of the day we all had fun and played as a team. I saw my teammates giving everything they had to provide for the team and that felt good to know that we don’t give up that easily even if it was for third place. I am happy with what we got, but I believe—and I hope my boys believe it too—we could’ve done better than bronze,” added Santos.

The 20-year-old veteran of the Micronesian Games also thanked his family and friends for their support not only during the Micro Cup but throughout his basketball career.

“I would like to dedicate the [All-Tournament Select team] award to my family, friends, and all my coaches that believed in me. Without you guys, I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be the player I am today. Thank you and God bless,” he said.

For the Won sisters, being named in the All-Tournament Select team was the cherry on top of the ice cream that was the silver medal.

“Being named part of the all-star five means a lot to us and it makes it even more special that we were able to represent our island while doing so. Saipan will forever be our home. We wouldn’t have been able to perform at this level though without the support of our teammates, coaches, family and of course hard work!”

The sisters also said the silver medal they won was worth all the sacrifices they’ve done the past few months.

“We’re proud of our team and our silver medal win. We put in so much work and we got better everyday. Everyone, both the players and coaches, always put in 110% and our hard work definitely paid off.”
