In an effort to further beautify Precinct 5 and to keep people safe, Rep. Richard Lizama (D-Saipan) has initiated a project to repaint the Laulau Bay sidewalk with paint that changes color to indicate when the pavement is slippery.

In an interview with Lizama last week, he said he hope to start repainting the Laulau Bay sidewalk this week.

“The paints are in so we will proceed with the project his week and hopefully complete the project in two weeks,” he said.

Lizama explained that he has received complaints from his constituents about how slippery the walkway is, especially when it rains and, because it’s a popular exercise route for Precinct 5 community members, Lizama said he wanted to do something about it. In addition to safety, Lizama said repainting the sidewalk would contribute to the beautification efforts not just in Precinct 5, but the entire CNMI as a destination.

“There were times when people were complaining because of the fact that the pathway is slippery. So I thought, ‘Let’s paint it with paint that [changes color] when it rains, letting people know that it could be dangerous. It’s going to be painted a pattern that will tell everyone, when the color of the paint changes, that means the sidewalk could be hazardous for the runner. So, by repainting the sidewalk, it is, one, beautification, and two, it indicates whether the pathway is hazardous or not. That’s basically why I decided to paint it, so people will not be afraid to run or walk, and for beautification,” he said.
