Getting in shape after you’ve been out of the game for a lengthy period is a painstaking process. With summer just around the corner, this has me thinking about how unfortunate it is that we only start to value our health and fitness when we get a wakeup call.

I understand our circumstances have a huge impact on determining what we prioritize. There’s only so much physical capital you can invest, especially when you take into consideration the other competing demands in your life, so I get it. Not trying to get all virtuous, but given this unique position I’ve held for a decade working with people from all walks of life it’s imperative I say something.

You have to draw the line somewhere and just do it. Don’t wait. I won’t bore you with the details because quite frankly, we’re all well aware how important it is to eat right and exercise regularly. There’s no debating that.

With all that in mind, here are a few reminders to help those of you involved in dropping a little bit of body fat and getting leaner this summer. The first week or so is pivotal. Typically, people getting back into it are off to the races. The harsh reality is, it’s almost a given you’ll fall off the wagon within the first few weeks—and the drop off becomes more than likely for those of you who are less experienced. Before you know it you’ve dug yourself a deeper hole to climb from.

There are many cases of folks losing a ton of weight only to gain it back and then some. As such, you’re probably better off easing your way into it instead of going all gung-ho.

Implementing small changes is always best. Presumably, many of you will opt to do some form of fast-paced, high-intensity interval workout in an attempt to expedite results. Let me be perfectly clear: it doesn’t work like that. What primarily governs that outcome is controlling your food intake and knowing when to put the fork down.
You can’t out-train, out-cardio a poor diet.
