On Thursday night at the Paseo Stadium, another landmark for Triton Baseball will pass as the University of Guam baseball team returns to the Guam Major League against the CP Amigos in the opening game for UOG in the spring/summer 2022 GML season.

The Tritons last played in the GML back in 2006 and won a Guam Major League Championship in 2003.

The program shook off the dust of 16 years and returned to Paseo Stadium about a month ago when they hosted their own Triton Invitational Baseball Tournament with the Dodgers, Amigos, and Guam Junior National Team involved in a two weekend tournament that the Dodgers won with a 6-0 record.

The Tritons were only 1-4 in the tournament but had two one games against the Dodgers and the Junior National Team that showed the potential was there and the program may have some life yet again to return to the Guam Major League and compete.

UOG coach Roke Alcantara Jr. has deep roots in baseball on the island and while the Tritons have a small roster now, he plans to recruit more players to the UOG campus and form the nucleus of another baseball powerhouse in the near future.

The Tritons face an 11-game regular season in the GML that will take the UOG team into the summer time and if the squad can make the playoffs, the team may go from June to July, just in time to start the process for 2022-23 team.

“We hope to recruit a team that will have 18-20 members in the fall of 2022 and establish ourselves as a place to be if you want to play baseball on Guam. We hope to host a league ourselves or hold a tournament in the fall that leads into the Guam Major League in the spring so our team can play 9-10 months of the year,” said Said UOG Athletics director Doug Palmer.

The Tritons have a roster of 13 players currently, but after experiencing their first baseball action in February/March, the team is ready to compete against the best teams on the island and return to the glory days of GML championships running through the Mangilao campus. (PR)
