CPA allocates $225K to pave Port of Saipan road

The Commonwealth Ports Authority has approved a supplemental budget request in the amount of $225,000 to cover the shortfall for the pavement of Industrial Drive at the Port of Saipan.

According to CPA board chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds, the board approved during a CPA board meeting last week the supplemental budget request that will come from CPA’s community benefit fund.

“We are tapping funds from the community benefit fund that we negotiated with Saipan Stevedore as part of their lease renewal,” she said.

After discussing the project for so long, the project will soon become a reality, she said.

“It’s been an item of discussion for some time and the underlying issue was who was responsible for the project. This board, through the leadership of Seaport [Committee] chair Pete Reyes, took a collaborative approach, engaging stakeholders to work together to identify and put together different sources of funding, regardless whose responsibility the road is, to just get it done,” she said.

King-Hinds said CPA, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works, has finally completed the design and is ready to start the long overdue project.

“This project will benefit our tenants and customers at the Port of Saipan as well as the community who frequently use that thoroughfare to get to the [Saipan Troop Store] and Inos Memorial Park,” the CPA chair said.

King-Hinds said the pavement project encompasses the road that runs in front of Elos S. Inos Memorial Peace Park to the Port of Saipan. In addition, the project will also include the construction of a Port of Saipan signage that CPA hopes will enhance the aesthetics of the area.
