Community partners, advocates, and government and non-government representatives gathered at the Tanapag Youth Center yesterday morning for a proclamation signing that designated April as CNMI Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention and Awareness Month, during which several child welfare staff were also recognized.

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, who signed the proclamation, also addressed the youth at the event, saying, “You need to take care of each other. …If you see things, talk to your teachers, your counselors, as they really need your help. Instead of bullying, offer your help and it goes a long way. Try to put yourself into their position.”

Vivian Sablan, Division of Youth Services administrator, recognized, highlighted, honored, and thanked the child welfare staff. “Child Protective Services staff are tasked to protect innocent lives, as young as newborns in ways that address both the physical and mental health dangers that arise from abuse or neglect at home.”

Sablan thanked them for their “courageous actions in the line of their work and commitment to working to ensure safety and family preservation.” She recognized nine CPS staff from Saipan, two from Rota, and two from Tinian.

The child welfare staff from Saipan were Julian R. Camacho, Benylin Mettao, Mariah M. Barcinas, Quaid O. Ngirchongor, Melycher I. Sablan, Juanicia Villanueva, Christine Joy C. Aldan, Marge S. Mendiola, Gennie Lynn Bliss. The staff recognized from Tinian were Augusta B. Famaw, Cindy Florene C. Alo. The staff recognized from Rota were Quindy M. Maratita, Mildred W. Sikebert.

According to the proclamation, child abuse and neglect can be prevented by making every family safe, and is given the support needed to raise their children in healthy, safe, and nurturing environment free of domestic violence, abuse and neglect. Our community and our children are the most valuable assets and are vital to the future success of prosperity. Everyone in the community should become more aware of child abuse prevention and consider helping parents use their children in a safe, nurturing environment.

Sablan said that April may officially be Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention and Awareness Month but their work at the Division of Youth Services continues every day to ensure that innocent lives are protected.

“The safety and overall being of children and families we serve will always be our utmost priority. We continue to thank our partners for working alongside our staff as well as the many parents, interns and volunteers who extend their assistance as we continue to work toward family strengthening in the CNMI,” she said.
