Hix steps down as Democratic Party chair
Nola K. Hix has stepped down as NMI Democratic Party chair, a position that she has held for three years, mainly because she lives in Guam now.
Hix said yesterday that she stepped down because of the challenges she faces in commuting from Guam to Saipan and vice versa.
Hix said the party unanimously chose Jonathan Cabrera as her successor during the NMI Democratic Party’s Executive Committee meeting last week. Hix appeared at the meeting via telephone conference and that it was she who nominated Cabrera to be the new chair.

“The Democratic Party needs someone physically on the ground at all times. I was able to name my successor,” Hix said.
Hix was elected chair in 2018 and requested to remain as chair in 2019. Hix said she asked that they allow her to stay on with the intent that she would travel back and forth from Guam once a month.
She said she wanted to continue the work because that was an election year—a historic year for the NMI Democratic Party.
Hix said she will continue to work on party projects and the gubernatorial campaign.
She said Rep. Corina L. Magofna (D-Saipan) leaving the party last week is just unfortunate timing but not the reason why she is stepping down now, as she had this discussion with the party since last month.
Magofna, who ran as a Democrat and won during a special election last Oct. 16, is seeking re-election for a House of Representatives Precinct 3 seat as an independent this Nov. 8 election.
Magofna said she made the decision after many deep and lengthy conversations and discussions with family members, friends, and her constituents.
