TOKYO—One of Japan’s top universities is offering all-expense-paid graduate school scholarships for college graduates from the three freely associated states who are interested in furthering their careers while helping the Micronesian region respond to challenges such as climate change. Two full-ride scholarships are available for the upcoming academic year at Sophia University’s Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies for applicants from the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.

“This is an opportunity for future leaders in the Micronesia region to earn an MA in Environmental Studies while studying with graduate students from over 50 countries,” said professor Anne McDonald of Sophia University.

Each scholarship includes full tuition support, a monthly stipend for living expenses, and the cost of roundtrip travel from a student’s home of record to Tokyo, Japan. Travel back to home countries is also available to scholarship holders during their program, to allow them to maintain ties to people and programs. Travel during the scholarship period is funded by the Bill Raynor Micronesia Challenge Scholarship Fund.

The graduate school scholarships were established by a partnership between Sophia University, an historic Jesuit university; The Association for Promotion of International Cooperation, a private foundation based in Tokyo that strengthens relations between Japan and the island nations of the Pacific and Caribbean; and the Micronesia Conservation Trust, a Pohnpei-based non-government organization that supports biodiverse conservation and sustainable development in the Micronesia region.

The deadline for submission of complete applications is March 31, 2022. An information session on Zoom will be held this Friday, March 18, at noon in the Marshall Islands (ZOOM INVITE: https://sophia-ac-jp.zoom.us/j/94469831037, Meeting ID: 944 6983 1037, Passcode: 370231)
