Tasi to Table Inc.’s 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas will launch from the Smiling Cove Marina tomorrow with over 40 boats expected to take part in the competition, according to the group’s vice president Dan Wollak.
The pursuit for the weightiest wahoo starts bright and early at 6am and concludes at 5pm. It will be followed immediately by an awards ceremony at 5:30pm where the first, second, and third place winners will be awarded cash prizes of $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000, respectively. A separate total weight award will also be given out and the winner will take home $500.
Tasi to Table secretary Derik Reyes, who started as a student member of the group two years ago, said they’re looking forward for the success of tomorrow’s 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas.
“Well for this being the first derby of the year we are hoping to reach 40 boats. Despite the increase in gas prices we are still hopefully for the best outcome. The students worked hard and diligently to put this Wahoo in the Marianas Fishing Tournament in motion!”
Aside from Wollak and Reyes, the other officers of Tasi to Table are president Gene Weaver and treasurer-Alex Castro. The 3rd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas is sponsored by Mobil Oil Marianas and IT&E.
Last year, the six-man crew of Lucky Harvest topped the 2nd Annual Wahoo in the Marianas after snagging a 36.1-lb wahoo. Captain Cecilio Raikuilipiy and his crew members took home the $2,000 first place bounty.
Coming in at second place was the crew of Borrow Fan, who brought in a 33.7-lb wahoo earning them the $1,500 prize. Third place and the $1,000 prize went to the fishermen aboard Sesa which reeled in a 32.6-lb wahoo. And in fourth, earning the $500 prize was the J&MJ crew who managed to reel in a 27.7-lb wahoo.
