Run Saipan’s Inaugural Marianas Ekiden is all set tomorrow with so far 10 teams signed up for the 21-kilometer relay from Micro Beach in Garapan to just before Pacific Islands Club Saipan in San Antonio and back.

Last year, 11 Saipan teams took part in the Guam Running Club’s Ekiden with Team 5 made up of Hiramitsu Ono, Micheteru Mita, Noriko Jim, and Taro Goto coming in first among Saipan teams with a time of 1:33.03.

“We wanted to keep the tradition going of doing long distance relay races. We had a great amount of interest last year as we are doing it this year but as our own race now. Last year we were supporting the Guam Running Club’s race,” said Run Saipan president Edward Dela Cruz Jr.

He said the non-profit running club will be entering two teams this year. Others that have so far signed up are Kosuke Sato’s team with a different lineup, Trey Dunn and Brad Ruszala’s Arguably Descent podcast team, Life in the Son pastor Eric Abragan’s team with the rest being raffled off teams.

“This year we are still raffling runners that couldn’t make a team or wanted to meet new runners randomly. That’s what we pride ourselves with the Ekiden relay raffle system we created from last year. Runners can be randomly drawn into teams and run for fun,” said Dela Cruz.
