MHS, Seisa High students celebrate Cultural Heritage Day

Over 100 students from Japan’s Seisa High School joined Marianas High School students in their celebration of Cultural Heritage Day last Friday.
MHS student council president Vinni Orsini said this marked the school’s 35th annual celebration of cultural day while it was the 26th year of the school’s PAL, or the participate and learn cultural exchange program, with Japanese partners.
With the theme “One Heart, One Love, One Culture,” Orsini lauded the strong immersion of two cultures for many years.
The daylong festivity on campus was highlighted by parade of cultures and performances from different class and grade levels as well as fundraising booths that aim to generate some monies for the various school clubs.
During the celebration, freshmen students demonstrated Korean national costumes while Indian cultural attire was exhibited by the sophomores. Junior students also proudly showcased the African attire while seniors represented the Brazil culture.
According to Orsini, despite the absence of the traditional booth competition this year, overall turnout for the event was overwhelming and a big success. He said the competition among school clubs and organizations was also conducted based on their performances while for food vendors, they were judged according to the type of food they sold and offered.
Orsini said there are a total of 110 Seisa High School students on island for a three-day vacation. They were seen enjoying moments with their local counterparts in both dancing and singing activities.
In her message to the attendees, MHS principal Cherlyn Cabrera welcomed all guests especially Japanese students who came for the occasion.
