Public warned of high surf, rip currents
A high surf advisory is in effect with a high risk of rip currents until 7am Tuesday. A small craft advisory is also in effect until 6am today, Monday.
Hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet is expected along north facing reefs of Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. The risk of rip currents will be high. Also, northeast winds of 15 to 20 knots with gusts up to 25 knots are present along Rota, Tinian and Saipan coastal waters until 6am today.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, hazardous swimming and surfing conditions will be present until 7am Tuesday. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
The public is warned to avoid venturing out toward north facing reefs. Elsewhere, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in these conditions. (Saipan Tribune)
