Winners named in CNMI-wide essay-writing contest

Ian Jun Ho Song of Saipan International School and Jermaine Chloe Yalung of the Dr. Rita H. Inos Jr./Sr. High School of Rota have been named the winners of an essay contest held in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance last Nov. 20, 2021.

Song was named the winner among the entries from Saipan, while Yalung won the top spot among the entries from Rota.

Aside from Son, the other Saipan winners were Joan Jun Hee Song of Saipan Community School, who won second place, and Chelsea Lorenzo of Marianas High School, who won third place.

The other Rota winners were Anthony Dean Jr. Magofna, who is in 7th Grade at the Dr. RHI Jr./Sr. High School, and won second place; T’keyah M. Emesiochl, Dr.RHI Jr./Sr. High School, 10th Grade, who won third place; and Tyrese M. Maratita, Dr.RHI Jr./Sr. High School, 7th Grade, who won fourth place.

The islandwide essay contest, which was held for Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, was sponsored by the Marianas LGBTO+ group T-Project, in partnership with the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library. It did not name a Tinian winner.

Eligible students in grades 7th to 12th grade were asked to submit their original piece of writing in response to the question: “What is Transgender Day of Remembrance and why is it important?” The essay contest ran from October 2021 to Jan. 31, 2022.
