MANGILAO, Guam—Guam Community College student members of the Medical Assistant Students Organization recently volunteered in the Guam Homeless Coalition’s point-in-time survey. The GHC’s purpose is to respond to the needs of homeless families and individuals by providing support through awareness, education, and advocacy. The GHC concluded its point-in-time survey last Jan. 28, 2022.
MASO public relations officer Cassandra Chang shared her teams’ duties during their volunteer time. “We interviewed numerous families and individuals, asking them questions in regards to their household size, ethnicity, and living conditions, which will give a clearer sense of the homeless population in Guam. We also provided supply/food bags to those families and individuals that participated in the survey,” said Chang.
• MASO was formed to enable medical assisting students to enhance and demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and professionalism required by employers and patients; continually demonstrate professionalism in the community and on the Guam Community College campus; and protect the student’s right to learn, and promote effective, efficient health care delivery through the optimal use of multi-skilled medical assistant students. MASO is intended to help students maintain the following core values of the medical assistant:
• Actively participate in the delivery of quality healthcare.
• Promote patient safety and well-being.
• Contribute to the positive healthcare experience for patients.
• Demonstrate integrity and respect and protect confidentiality.
• Advocate the essential value of certification and continued education.
• Embrace change, growth, and learning.
