Thanks to the USA Graduate School’s Pacific Islands Training Initiative and funding support from the Office of Insular Affairs, several grants program managers were able to advance to the final capstone course in what was a three-part series in Grants Management Professional training. The participants will receive their full Continuing Professional Education credits in Grants Management, Grants Performance, and the Effective Grants Manager.

The “Effective Grants Manager” course was held from May 12 to May 15, 2014, and was led by instructor Mary Beth Saenz. This three-day, 24-hour capstone course is the third and final course in the Certificate of Accomplishment in Grants Management program. The course explores the next steps toward increasing economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of grants and grant-funded programs; explores current issues and events in grants management along with how to prepare for a grants audit; and works a comprehensive case study in a simulated team environment to apply all the principles covered in the grants management curriculum.

After the successful completion of this course, participants are now able to identify current issues and trends in grants management; assess and address the 10 most common audit findings in grant programs; and identify new and unique options for dealing with special challenges in grants such as volunteer recruitment/training/retention, advertising of services, communication between the “number-crunchers” and the program/performance managers, and much more.

“Thanks to the support from the Pacific Islands Training Institute and the Office of Insular Affairs, the 35 local federal program managers finally completed all the required training materials and are able to apply the expected outcomes for their particular federal programs. I am confident these graduates will be able to pass on the knowledge learned to their counterparts,” said Office of Grants Management administrator Sheryl Sizemore. (Office of the Governor)
