Dolphins, Knights prevail in high school hoops

Marianas High School and Mt. Carmel School won their respective debuts in the IT&E Interscholastic Boys High School Basketball League last Friday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The Dolphins got the better of Saipan International School. They led 14-7 after the first half before keeping the Geckos in arm’s length in the second half to score the 20-17 win.

MHS was led by the 6 points of Raven Francisco, while Christian Ilo, Kerby Manganti, and Aiden Suba tossed in 3 points apiece in support. Kuu Nishimura was again brilliant by firing 9 points but in a loss.

The Knights, meanwhile, ran roughshod over Da’ok Academy, 31-10. Mt. Carmel got off to a great start and never looked back. The Knight led 17-4 at the break before coasting to the win in the second half. Merrick Toves and Leopoldo Naraja paced the winners with 7 points each, while the 6 markers of Mark Castro topped Da’ok Academy.

IT&E Interscholastic Boys High School Basketball League is organized by Public School System’s Athletic Program with help from the Northern Mariana Islands Basketball Federation.

MHS 20 – Francisco 6, Ilo 3, Manganti 3, Suba 3, Sapipi 2, Nartea 2.

SIS 14 – Nishimura 9, Li 3, McDonald 2.

Scoring by halves: 14-7, 20-14.

MCS 31 – Toves 7, Naraja 7, Steele 5, Shen 4, Tenorio 3, Diaz 2, Lerio 2.

Da’ok Academy 10 – Castro 6, Kaipat 2, Camacho 2.

Scoring by halves: 17-4, 32-10.
