The Saipan Swim Club will have its second competition of the year when it holds the Pau Pau to Tanapag 3K on Jan. 22.

The open water swim is a straight line distance and is just over 3 kilometers or almost 2 miles long. It will have three age categories—under 14, Open (14-and-up), and masters (35-and-up).

SSC coach Richard Sikkel said they decided to hold the Pau Pau to Tanapag 3K after some swimmers in the community suggested the route.

“There are a lot of swimmers out there who swim for fun or as part of a training regimen either by themselves or in a small group and a lot of them have mentioned a Pau Pau to Tanapag swim. It is a beautiful 3K with the current swim,” he said.

Sikkel added that for SSC swimmers, the Pau Pau to Tanapag 3K is a nice change of pace from the usual pool practices as well as a beautiful open water swim to start 2022.

“Swimming can get very repetitive and boring so by organizing different swims I am hoping to keep it fresh for my younger competitive swimmers, but also entice other swimmers—master swimmers—to come out and join,” he said.

The Pau Pau to Tanapag 3K will have registration, marking, and race briefing at the Pau Pau Beach parking lot from 5:30am to 6am on race day. The race will start promptly at 6am or first light. An awards ceremony will commence immediately after the race.

Participants are encouraged to coordinate transportation back from the Tanapag boat ramp to Pau Pau Beach. SSC will also strictly observe all COVID-19 protocols set in place by the Governor’s COVID-19 Task Force and the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.

Registration for the Pau Pau to Tanapag 3K started last Saturday, Jan. 8, and you can register by clicking your browsers to https://www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=263714&fbclid=IwAR1vnQodk7pRqlwSjrukXZfMnm4TMNM-XdNPO4zzdUMxAt74JzbN5yDCI3k.
